BNK defeated the Iranian National Team, ranked 78th by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), 87-44 in the first round of the 42nd William Jones Cup on Friday afternoon at Heping Gymnasium in Taipei, Taiwan.

BNK, which finished runner-up in the Women’s Professional Basketball League in the 2022-2023 season, represented South Korea in the Jones Cup.

Led by Park Jeong-jeong, BNK will compete for the title against six other teams, including the Iranian National Team, Taiwan, Japan’s Chanson Cosmetics, and the Philippines National Team.

BNK will play the second game of the tournament on Saturday afternoon at the same venue against Taiwan B, a team comprised of Taiwan’s senior national team players.

Park Jeong-jeong started her best members, including captain Kim Han-byul, as well as Jin-an, Ahn Hye-ji, Lee So-hee, and Kim Sion.

BNK set the tone from the outset against the Iranians, whose entire roster wore hijabs.

About two minutes into the first quarter, Lee So-hee opened with a three-pointer and followed it up with a floater, showing off her high-sensitivity shooting.

Kim Ji-eun and Han Um-ji also hit three-pointers as BNK closed out the first quarter with a 22-6 lead.

In the second quarter, Lee So-hee, Kim Sion, and “transfer” Park Da-jung also hit three-pointers.

Choi Seo-yeon, a transfer from Samsung Life in Yongin, scored after a dazzling dribble break to extend BNK’s lead to 32 points.

Kim Sion, who hit two three-pointers in the third quarter, helped BNK to a 69-29 lead.

With just over four minutes left in the fourth quarter, even Park Kyung-rim hit a free throw, and all 12 players who started the game scored.

Choi Seo-yeon made two free throws with three seconds left in the game to make it 87-44.

Iran kept BNK close, with the first and last three points of the game coming with just over 40 seconds left in the second quarter.
