Soccer pundit Chris Sutton has criticized Cole Palmer.
“Chris Sutton insists there must be something wrong with Palmer, as if Pep Guardiola doesn’t make mistakes,” the soccer outlet Tribuna reported on April 24.
Palmer is a left-footed two-way player who can play as both an attacking midfielder and a winger. Palmer plays clean and concise and has good feet, which allows him to dribble past opponents. He also has a wide range of vision, which allows him to get into the attack quickly, and he often scores with his trademark left-footed shot.
He has been with City since 2009 and made his debut in the 2020/21 season, starting in the Carabao Cup round of 16 against Burnley. He didn’t play much in the 2021/22 season due to injury, but he impressed the fans with his performances before the injury. Last season, he made 25 appearances, albeit mostly as a substitute, and scored one goal and one assist, leaving much to be desired in terms of attacking points.
This summer’s transfer window saw a lot of interest in him, with Dortmund, Burnley, Leicester City, Brighton, and many others all chasing him. With City losing Mahrez but gaining Jeremy Dockoo, there was no place for Palmer, so he needed a move to a team where he could play.
Reports, starting with a report from Ben Jacobs on August 30 and later confirmed by Chelsea insiders such as Matt Law, suggested that Chelsea FC were after Palmer, and Romano later said that talks were ready to begin and that Chelsea now considered Palmer to be their first option over other strikers.
In the end, the 21-year-old midfielder’s move to Chelsea was agreed,굿모닝토토 with the Blues paying a transfer fee of £42.5 million for a player who has played a total of 10 minutes in the Premier League this season.
Palmer quickly settled in at Chelsea. Coming off the bench against Nottingham Forest on Sept. 3, he was the kind of playmaker Chelsea needed, piquing Pochettino’s interest, and he’s been on the bench ever since.
He started the League Cup game against Brighton on September 28th and picked up an assist, and he followed that up with starts against Fulham and Burnley, scoring his Chelsea debut against Burnley and adding another goal from the PK against Arsenal. He now has two goals and one assist in seven games.
“Whether he doesn’t fit into Pep Guardiola’s style of play or whatever it is, there must be something missing in Pep’s mind,” Sutton told the podcast It’s All Kicking Off.
“He’s a good enough player, he’s a talented enough player, so how can you question Pep Guardiola at this moment in time? They won the Champions League last season, they’ve won the Premier League for the last three seasons, and whatever it is, he can’t do much wrong.”
