It’s not Son Heung-min-James Maddison (Tottenham Hotspur), it’s Mohamed Salah-Darwin Núñez (Liverpool), who have been the Premier League’s most exciting duo this season.
The Reds cruised to a 3-0 victory over Brentford in the 12th round of the 2023/24 Premier League at Anfield in Liverpool, England, on Wednesday (Aug. 12), thanks to a brace from Salah and another from Diogo Jota. With the three points, Liverpool moved up to second in the league with eight wins, three draws and 27 points. Brentford remain in 11th place with four wins, four draws, and 16 points.
Salah was the star of the show. Starting in a back three alongside Jota and Núñez, Salah opened the scoring in the 39th minute when he converted a pass from Núñez. Núñez slipped a pass to Salah, who found space in the box and rattled the net with a left-footed shot to the far post. It was his ninth goal of the season, moving him past Son Heung-min (eight) into second place on the all-time goalscoring list.
Salah made it a multi-goal game in the 27th minute. He headed home a cross from Kostas Chimikas to split the net. With the goal, Salah became just the second player to score double figures in the league, joining Elling Holland (Manchester City).굿모닝토토 주소
Two minutes after Salah’s second goal, Jota added the icing on the cake as Liverpool cruised to a 3-0 victory. The Reds are now unbeaten in five games after a 1-2 loss to Tottenham last month and have climbed to second place in the league. Just one point separates them from leaders Man City, setting up a tight title race.
After the game, soccer statistics company Opta revealed that Salah and Núñez have been the best duo in the league this season.
“Salah and Núñez have created the most chances (19) and provided the most assists (5) between them in the Premier League this season,” said Opta. “Salah provided Núñez with 13 chances and one assist. Núñez created six chances and provided four assists – it’s synergy.”
Núñez also proved to be the perfect companion for Salah. All seven of Núñez’s assists in the Premier League since joining Liverpool last season have gone to Salah. They work perfectly together.
Their chemistry began in the third round against Newcastle United. Núñez scored twice and Salah assisted Núñez’s come-from-behind winner in a 2-1 Liverpool win at Newcastle.
In the 3-0 win over Aston Villa, Núñez assisted Salah’s goal, and again in the eighth round against Brighton, Núñez assisted Salah’s goal in a 2-2 draw. Against Everton in round nine, Núñez assisted Salah’s goal as Liverpool won 2-0. If you add in the Brentford game, the pair have combined for five goals.
Similarly, the Tottenham duo of Heung-min Son and Maddison have been overshadowed by the Salah-Nunez duo. While the duo have been working well together every game, their combined goal total of three is less than you might expect. In the North London derby against Arsenal, Maddison assisted on both of Son’s goals, while Son assisted on Maddison’s goal against Fulham.
Add to that the fact that Maddison suffered an ankle injury against Chelsea and won’t be back for the rest of the year, and we won’t be seeing the pair together for a while. The gap between them and the Salah-Núñez duo is set to widen.
